Project

In 544, my project was to make a DVD that contained a series of small clips that shows elementary students self-talking the strategies they are using to take a reading comprehension test. The DVD could also help in teaching strategies that address specific reading comprehension standards.

My reasoning for this idea was that teachers essentially teach the same strategies, but that they are taught in different ways. This would cause less variation in which strategies are taught and how they are taught. Students would be seeing the same strategies within a grade level and perhaps across grade levels. I have yet to decide if I want to focus on just third grade or attempt to broaden it to 2nd-5th grades with two versions. One version would focus on 2nd and 3rd grades, and the other would be for 4th and 5th grades. The comprehension element would have to be a similar standard for all grades if that is the path I choose.

Something else I have been contemplating is that I should make a ppt presentation that actually incorporates these clips rather than just a DVD of the clips.

That sounds interesting! A few years ago we invited Action Learning Systems to our district and they helped implement teaching strategies that we use throughout our school. All teachers were expected to use the strategies. While many teachers balked at anyone telling them how to teach, it did standardize the methods. Students knew what each strategy was and how it worked. The strategies basically broke down the learning process into steps. Good learners already do these things without thinking but it's not natural for all students. I think it's helpful.

Katheryn,
Since you teach 3rd grade, and are a subject matter expert (SME), it might be easier for you to just focus on 3rd grade reading comprehension skills/ standards.

Maybe the Power Point can be a starting place, then you could build on it with a supplemental resource such as the DVD.

Great idea for a project!!!
